Important question from A Ghostly Wife
Dipak Kumar Hazra
"Now this was an infallible test..." - Who made the 'test'? What is the 'infallible test'? Why was it 'infallible'? What was the result of the 'infallible test'?
Ans : In Lal Behari Dey's folktale "A Ghostly Wife" The Ohja made the 'test'.
The 'infallible test' refers to the method of holding burnt turmeric below the woman's nose to find whether she was a real woman or a Sankchinni.
This test is called the 'infallible test' because no ghost can tolerate the smell of the burnt turmeric.
When the Ohja placed the burnt turmeric below the woman's nose, she screamed loudly and rushed out of the room. Thus as the result of the 'infallible test', it was revealed to all that the woman was not a real woman because she was a Sankchinni.
